Sigiriya Lion Rock
King Kashyapa's 5th-century sky palace, with frescoes, a mirror wall, lion's paws and summit ruins.

Sigiriya is a 200-metre rock fortress rising from the plains of the Cultural Triangle. In the 5th century, King Kashyapa built his palace on its summit, and today the site is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Asia's great wonders.
Climb past water gardens, the famous 'Sigiriya maidens' frescoes and the giant lion's paws to the summit ruins. Climb nearby Pidurangala at sunrise for the classic view of Sigiriya, fly over the jungle in a hot-air balloon, and use the area as a base for Dambulla, Polonnaruwa and Minneriya.
Start the climb at 7 am when the gates open to avoid the heat and crowds, and bring water.
